Pickleball is easy to pick up and hard to put down. If it’s your first time on a court, these five things will make the first hour smoother.
1. Don’t worry about owning gear
You don’t need to buy a paddle before your first game. Book the Court + 4 Paddles bundle and everything you need is already there when you arrive.
2. Learn the serve before anything else
Pickleball serves underhand, below the waist, diagonally across the court. That one rule covers most of the confusion beginners have in their first few rallies.
3. Respect the kitchen
The non-volley zone (the "kitchen") is the 7-foot area on either side of the net — you can’t hit the ball out of the air while standing in it. It’s the single most-asked-about rule for new players.
4. Wear court shoes, not running shoes
Pickleball involves quick lateral movement. Running shoes are built for forward motion and can slip on quick side-to-side steps — court or tennis shoes grip better.
5. Bring water and expect to sweat more than you think
Games move fast and rallies are short but frequent. It’s a better workout than it looks like from the outside — bring water, whether you book a Daytime or an Evening slot.
None of this needs to be perfect on day one — most people are rallying comfortably within their first session. Book a slot on the Pricing & Book page and see for yourself.
